My Plea:
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am honoured and privileged to be nominated and shortlisted for the Butterfly Award for Health Care Professional 2019. For the nomination to come from a patient I have cared for is overwhelming.
My passion is caring for couples who have experienced recurrent miscarriages or early pregnancy complications. Making a difference and impacting people’s lives is what drives me.
I am the Lead Midwife for Early Pregnancy and Miscarriage Care at University Hospital Birmingham. I am the first Midwife to Chair the Association of Early Pregnancy Units that sets standards for hospitals in the UK. I sit on the NICE guideline group and ESHRE working committee for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care.
Working in a Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic and Early Pregnancy Unit is a vocation, not a job. To know that the work we do impacts people’s lives whether that be the research we are conducting, conference we are running to educate other health professional or reassurance scans for the couple to support them.
I truly believe that you can give good supportive care even when the you are giving bad news and caring for a couple in a very sad time, to be part of the couples journey during their darkest days is a privilege to any health professional the couple allow to care for them.
What Others Have Said
A few weeks after our miscarriage, I was rushed back in to receive further care following a massive bleed from retained tissue. Rachel came in very early on a Sunday morning to scan me, talk me through my options and then sat with me for a few hours – all on her own day off. Her experience and support during this time was invaluable. She did everything to make this awful time much more comforting. She is a true professional.
